What is BIT
Information and communication technology (ICT) is one of the fastest growing sectors in Sri Lanka. The workforce requirements to sustain this growth is one criterion that would ensure the sustainable growth of this sector. However, the local universities, funded by the government, can accommodate only a limited number of students every year for ICT education.
University of Moratuwa is always cognizant of the demands of the world of work and identifying that there is a huge gap in the required ICT workforce in Sri Lanka, Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) External Degree was started to enhance opportunities to provide qualified industry ready IT graduates. This is a great opportunity for students, since this programme offers them a chance of graduating at lower cost compared to foreign degrees offered by many institutions.
“Sri Lanka’s information technology and business process outsourcing sector tripled exports and doubled the workforce in a little over five years. The sector grew by 120 percent over the past five years making it one of the highest growth areas in the economy and the fifth largest export segment. Sri Lanka’s IT/business process management sector envisions $5 billion in revenue, 200,000 direct jobs, and 1,000 start-ups by 2022.” https://www.export.gov/apex/article2?id=Sri-Lanka-Information-and-Communication-Technologies
The Bachelor of Information Technology External Degree provides access to University of Moratuwa education through open and distance mode and enables students from all over the country to benefit from all the advantages of a well-planned and meticulously executed degree programme.

How can I do it?
Students who have passed the Advanced Level examination in any stream can choose to join this external degree programme. Lateral entry enables students who have other approved qualifications to take a selected number of courses to obtain the degree. Students can benefit from the teaching offered at approved partner organizations. In this learning setting, a student studies at a partner organization, while the assessments, examinations and award of diplomas, higher diplomas and degrees are conducted and conferred by the University of Moratuwa.
UoM offers its BIT courses in a fully-fledged online system, and therefore, students can study in the comfort of their own home, in addition to studying at the approved partner organizations. The online system makes available course material for the students to follow, and portals to submit assessments and receive feedback. This has opened a unique learner-centred education paradigm, where what matter is the enthusiasm and scholarship of the student.
UoM BIT degree programme in offered in two modes. Students can either decide to follow the BIT degree program as a partner organization student (mode 01) or direct independent student (mode 02). Mode 1 is study with an accredited partner organization. Mode 2 is the direct independent study mode where the students can register with the university, and study on their own using the e-learning materials and other open and distance learning resources facilitated by the CODL.
Upon completing the first year of the programme, the students will be given a diploma in IT, while the completion of the second year would lead to a higher diploma in IT. The third-year students will receive their BIT degree once they complete the third year of study.
