The Centre for Open and Distance Learning (CODL) was established in the year 2006 to facilitate the administrative and academic support activities of study programs offered in open and distance learning mode.
CODL@UoM was established to fulfill the administrative and logistical tasks of offering degrees in open and distance mode. Students who register for direct on-line mode have access to all the course materials and assignments on-line. Further on-line tutors/ mentors also assist in academic as well as administrative matters. Those who have registered through the University of Moratuwa accredited partner organizations have face to face teaching sessions conducted by qualified lecturers in the partner organizations as well as all the course materials and assignments provided on-line. Today in addition to providing a high quality degree programme in ODL mode we have been able to do so at a very competitive cost enabling students who could not gain admission to a state university to have government funded education, to gain an opportunity to obtain the degree without much of a financial burden. CODL works in close collaboration with the local IT industry and government who are the potential employers of the graduates to identify the emerging needs of knowledge and skills that must be incorporated into the teaching learning process. Inculcating attitudes required by the world of work is a core area of attention of the CODL. Centre works together with the Faculty of IT to enhance and update the curriculum to meet these evolving demands.

Sri Lanka to succeed as an emerging economy, a balance between a manufacturing-based economy and one driven by knowledge, services, ideas, information and technology is pivotal. A key requisite for this is developing the human capacity needed for an emerging economy. Hence increasing the number of graduates in Information Technology and related areas is a must for accelerated and sustained development of the country’s economy.
University of Moratuwa is geared towards meeting the country’s requirement of professionally qualified workforce and also to be a forerunner in identifying the tomorrow’s human capital needs. Having been a pioneer in starting a dedicated computer science and engineering degree in 1986 and expanding the IT related education by inaugurating the country’s first faculty of Information Technology in 2001, the University laid the foundation for providing IT education at much larger scale by starting the external degree of Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) in 2006/7.
We at CODL are looking forward to having you as a registered student for BIT enabling you to obtain a degree to be a successful professional who will meaningfully contribute to Sri Lanka’s economic and social development.
